The wonders of the night sky !

We are the last generation that have seen a clear sky of natural stars, the wonders of a starry night. Many may not understand this statement, but unfortunately, it is true.

Let me explain; at the beginning of 2020, Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched 240 small satellites into space. The Starlink internet service; has around 1,300. And more are planned to launch from SpaceX.
Competitors like the UK-based OneWeb. SpaceX has permission to launch 12,000 satellites, with dreams of launching a total of 30,000 one day.

Over time and increasingly fast, the night sky will be a dome of stars and artificial satellites that shine like stars. This saddens me as we have now invaded the space sky natural beauty.

Astronomers are very concerned about this phenomenon as we will lose the true magic of a starry night. The wonders of the sky have fascinated humans since the beginning of time, a full moon is one of the most poignant and romantic moments. Few can resist the allure of a full moon with a starry carpet of gleaming stars. With satellites crawling into the last of our spaces, there’s little in the way of a future where you look up and see the sky as it was meant to be.

The other effects that are harrowing for astronomers; as the satellites cross into the view of their observatories, it can ruin the images. The effect of the satellite constellations is like painting graffiti on a World Heritage Site. But not just graffiti in one particular location — graffiti that can be seen worldwide.

Starlink and its competitors are pursuing a goal with merit: to connect more of the world, mainly remote, rural places, to the internet. This increased connectivity could even help scientists work in more places on Earth. (It’s not entirely altruistic, however: These companies plan on charging for this internet.) They claim that they will reach the sites cut off from broadband access and the modern world and economy.

Thousands of microsatellites will be launched in the coming years, changing our sky’s landscape.

The other potential hazards are when satellites break up in the sky. The space debris it causes stays up there as junk until gravity pulls it back to Earth. A Starlink satellite and one from OneWeb had a near collision.

We lose intangible things when we alter the night sky. “Satellite constellations … strike at the core of humanity’s scientific and cultural relationship to the night sky, affecting millennia-old sky traditions and cultural practices across all nations around celestial cycles and the night sky,” physicists Aparna Venkatesan, James Lowenthal, Parvathy Prem, and Monica Vidaurri write in Nature Astronomy. “Treating space as the ‘Wild West’ frontier that requires conquering continues to incentivize claiming by those who are well-resourced.”
